How Kindness and Empathy Will Reset and Reshape A Better World: Jamil Zaki, Ph.D., with Dave Asprey – #694

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Jamil Zaki, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Stanford University and the director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Lab. Our conversation explores kindness, empathy, and compassion. You’ll find out the surprising ways people carry these traits into their personal lives and their broader social groups and communitites.

In a stack rank, kindness wins: “So kindness is, obviously, I think the most important for us as a collective,” Jamil says. “We need to cooperate, we need to work together, and that’s whether you’re in a family or a company or a culture.”

Jamil has presented and written extensively about kindness and empathy, with featured articles in the New York Times, the Washington Post, The New Yorker, and the Atlantic and many more publications and media outlets. He’s the author of the book: “The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World.” (It’s available in hardcover now or you can preorder the paperback, set to release, June 2, 2020.)

Using tools from psychology and neuroscience, he gives us a totally new understanding empathy by examining how empathy works and how people can learn to empathize more effectively.

Empathy has been thought of as a hardwired trait—as in you either have it or you don’t. But Jamil says it’s a learnable skill that can be taught, strengthened and adapted to the modern world. And we need that more than ever in the current calamity of Covid-19. “That sense of common humanity and common vulnerability can really actually ignite massive amounts of empathy,” he says.

Listen on to learn how to bring more empathy and kindness into your life now and how to shape it for the future.

Tech Billionaires vs. The COVID-19 Pandemic: Dave Asprey hosts Tech Journalist Kara Swisher – #693

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is one of the most revered tech journalists in the U.S. technology space. Kara Swisher is a contributing writer to the New York Times Opinion section and appears weekly on NBC. We get into tech impacts, human downgrading, and how Covid-19 has created shifts and opportunities in the tech community.

She’s executive producer of the Code Conference, an annual event that brings together a global community of the biggest tech names in the business to explore current and future impact of digital technology. She also hosts the podcast Recode: Decode and co-hosts the podcast Pivot. Both shows dive into many aspects of the tech world with sharp insight.

Kara’s experience in tech spans nearly 30 years where she’s been watching it unfold—in all its glory and ugliness. She’s tackled tough topics and raised hard questions within the industry. A few things we talk about in this episode:

  • Big tech: “I still feel like this idea that we need these big giant tech companies that control everything is a real problem for innovation,” she says. “I’ve always thought the way we get to any solution to anything is a diversity of opinion, a diversity of efforts, a diversity of small companies being on a plane where they can compete with larger companies.”
  • Tech Diversity: “But you’re still a rare being, being a woman or a person of color running or being in a significant position of power at a tech company,” she says.
  • Tech Billionaire Philanthropy: “Where’s the accountability?” she says. “Where’s the decision making as a society? Where’s all of us deciding together what we want rather than a small group of people, who may or may not have good motives.”
  • Tech’s Space Roots: “You’re either a Star Trek person or a Star Wars person. I would like to be a Star Trek person, but I fear we live in a Star Wars universe.”

Surprise Guest: Tiffany Haddish Tells Dave Asprey Her Shelter-in-Place Secrets

In this bonus episode of Bulletproof Radio, I had a fun conversation with Tiffany Haddish, a comedian and award-winning actress who stars in numerous television series and feature films.

She’s sheltering in place during this coronavirus pandemic, so we got to talk about what she’s doing to stay healthy and sane. Whether it’s gardening, old-school self-help, or learning to do the splits, Tiffany does it with humor and a whole lot of sass.

Tiffany’s life journey and experiences growing up in foster care in South Central Los Angeles inspired her comedy and sense of humor both on and off the stage. They’ve also been the foundation of her memoir, “The Last Black Unicorn.” During our talk, she shares some of her early career and the important breaks she got along the way. Tiffany also opens up about how she’s learned to ask for help and advice, when to forgive, when to let people go, and how to hack the voice in your head.

Catch Tiffany on the Netflix miniseries “Self-Made” and in the TBS comedy, “The Last OG.”

You Are Enough! Find Your Authentic State with Panache Desai and Dave Asprey – #692

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m welcoming a guest with a unique power of insight and a gift of energetic transformation. Panache Desai helps people to “be enough” and break free from suffering and limitation on every level. He helps foster a deeper understanding of who they are, and guides them into greater states of connection, collaboration, and love.

“When you’re authentically being yourself, you are peaceful,” he says. “When you’re tapped into that enlightened consciousness that you are, you are peaceful. This is how you know you are connected to you.”

He’s has been interviewed by Oprah Winfrey on her wildly popular SuperSoul Sunday show. He’s also collaborated alongside Deepak Chopra, and steps in for Rev. Michael Beckwith at the Agape International Spiritual Center.

In his new book, You Are Enough: Revealing the Soul to Discover Your Power, Potential, and Possibility, he offers a persuasive and powerful approach to meet the challenges of the modern moment and heal the fractured self it produces.

“If we’re not feeling like we’re enough, we’re sending all of those signals through the body,” Panache says. “We’re creating a biology of not being enough, and then we’re creating a reality of not being enough. And so, the fundamental shift that we have to go through is building from a foundation of being enough because there’s a superpower that we tap into from that place.”

Ozone Therapy: Strengthen Your Immunity and Combat Viruses – Dave Asprey Talks with Dr. Frank Shallenberger – #691

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Frank Shallenberger returns to the show with step-by-step ways to boost your innate immune system and keep viruses at bay. “You’ll never get over any kind of infection if you don’t have an immune system to eventually take charge,” he says.

Dr. Shallenberger has been a practicing physician for nearly 50 years, both in the fields of conventional medicine and alternative/homeopathic/integrative medicine. He’s revolutionized the practice of anti-aging and preventive medicine by developing a patented method to measure mitochondrial function, metabolism, and oxygen utilization.

He’s also someone who knows more than you might expect on how viruses operate inside the body and what you can do about almost any virus in the body. He offers up a unique protocol that includes Vitamins A, C and D, zinc, nebulized hydrogen peroxide, and ozone. “One of the things I love most about ozone is that it complements everything,” he says.

Considered the leading expert of medical ozone therapy in the United States, Dr. Shallenberger is best known for his research involving the use of ozone therapy for immune-related disorders. “What’s cool about ozone is that it signals all kinds of systems to do all kinds of things,” he says. “And so, that’s why we can use it in so many different areas.”

Listen on for step-by-step tips and guidelines on how to follow the protocol safety. And there may just be a few mushrooms thrown in for good measure.

Covid-19 Turns Inflammation from Protective to Predatory – Dave Asprey with Dr. David Liepert – #690

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I get into inflammatory responses and the lessons pain teaches us with my guest, Dr. David Liepert.

“COVID is doing damage by overwhelming us and causing uncontrolled inflammation,” he says. “The inflammatory response to COVID is actually somewhat protective. The question is, at what point does it become counter-protective, or even counterproductive, or even producing injury? The same thing is true systemically, that, for instance, social distancing and quarantine are kind of a social form of inflammation.”

“Basically, uncontrolled inflammation is another way to think of a cytokine storm,” he says. “Cytokines are meant to be the solution, but uncontrolled, they literally become the thing that’s killing us, rather than helping us get better.”

Dr. Liepert a physician with a broad range of expertise in critical care, specialty anesthesiology, and quality improvement and assessment programs within Canada’s healthcare system. He’s dedicated much of his professional work to helping patients find solutions to chronic pain.

He also serves as chief medical officer and advisor to several companies leading development and discoveries for mobile health and wellness monitoring, and AI solutions.

I asked him to talk more about how this type of virus (Covid-19) is bringing our health systems down, not just us individually.

“My one big struggle with academic medicine and the way it responds to situations like this is, academic medicine assumes we know what questions to ask,” Dr. Liepert says. “And if we don’t even know what question to ask, we’re never going to find the right answer.”
