8 Detox Methods That Really Work

8 Detox Methods That Really Work

  • There are lots of detoxes out there, and many of them don’t work.
  • Your body is wise does a lot of detoxing on its own, but certain chemicals or a higher toxic load make it tough for your body to clear toxins efficiently.
  • Here’s what you can do to help your body’s natural detox pathways along.

It’s no wonder detox diets are so popular. They promise to give you more energy, help you lose weight, and clear up your skin, among other things. You can use a good detox to bounce back from overindulgence, like a sugar binge or having one too many with your friends.

The trouble is, many common detoxes don’t work. Juice and water cleanses, for example, are often counterproductive because they deprive your body of essential nutrients it needs to function.

A good detox protocol can help you eliminate more stubborn toxins by supporting your natural detoxification pathways. Juice isn’t in the answer, but there are plenty of other ways to assist your body without spending a lot of money or a ton of your time.

[readmore title=”See the detox methods checklist”]

What are toxins?

Yes, harmful chemicals are everywhere. Car exhaust, secondhand smoke, flame retardants, plastic packaging, heavy metals, pesticides, exogenous hormones in conventional meat and dairy, BPA-coated receipts… Unless you’re living in a virgin forest, you’re going to come into contact with some less-than-optimal chemicals pretty much every day.

No reason to panic. Your body is wise and does a lot of detoxing on its own. However, certain chemicals or a higher toxic load may make it tough for your body to clear toxins efficiently.

For example, you eliminate most of the bisphenol-A (BPA) and other plastics you ingest, but a small percentage hides away in your fat cells, messing with your hormones and accumulating over time. It’s the same deal with several mold toxins, heavy metals like lead, nickel, cadmium, mercury, and aluminum, and with certain pharmaceuticals and drugs.

Benefits of detox

No one is immune from the toxic load of modern life. From the air you breathe to the food you eat (yes, even when you’re Bulletproof!), supporting your natural detox pathways can lead to some major benefits.

1) Sauna for detox

Sweating does more than cool you off. It also helps you get rid of both heavy metals and xenobiotics – foreign compounds like plastics and petrochemicals – in small but significant amounts. A 2012 review of 50 studies found that sweating can remove lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury, especially in people with high heavy metal toxicity. Another study put participants in both traditional and infrared saunas and found similar results. Sweating also eliminates hormone-disrupting BPA, which accumulates in your fat cells.

What kind sauna is best for detox?

There’s debate about the best kind of sauna for detox. A couple studies have shown that infrared saunas are the most effective for detoxing, but the research was funded by infrared sauna companies, so take the results with a grain of salt. Both traditional and infrared saunas are effective for detoxing. That said, I prefer infrared saunas for a few reasons:

Benefits of infrared saunas:

  • They don’t get as hot. Traditional saunas heat the air around you, while infrared light penetrates and heats your tissue directly. You sweat in an infrared sauna at around 130-150 degrees instead of at 180-200 degrees so you can stay in for longer without feeling like you’re going to pass out. I’ve done 2-hour infrared sauna sessions (drinking salt water the whole time to replenish electrolytes and fluids, of course).
  • They’re easier on your electric bill. Again, infrared saunas require less energy, especially if you get a sauna that reflects infrared light back on you. This one, for example, costs about 15 cents an hour to run.
  • Infrared saunas are usually cheaper. Not only are the generally cheaper than standard saunas, there are tons of different sizes and price points when it comes to infrared saunas.

I personally use a Sunlighten infrared sauna and love it. If you don’t want to buy an infrared sauna and there isn’t one around you, a standard sauna will work perfectly well. There’s probably one in your local gym.

Keep in mind that sweating pulls electrolytes and trace minerals from your body, so it’s important to drink a lot of fluids and get plenty of salt (preferably Himalayan pink salt or another mineral-rich natural salt) if you’re going to use a sauna to detox.

2) Exercise to flush toxins

Regular exercise is another way to flush toxins from your body, and through more than just making you sweat. Exercise increases lipolysis (the breakdown of fat tissue), releasing toxins stored in your fat tissue. Lipolysis is especially effective when you combine it with liver and kidney support or adsorbents that can suck up the released toxins. This article focuses on all of the above.

Studies show that people who exercise and lose body fat end up with higher levels of circulating hormone disruptors. Increasing lipolysis through diet does the same thing.

Mobilizing toxins isn’t necessarily a good thing, particularly if you’re unequipped to get rid of them. You want to be sure you’re getting rid of toxins, not just moving them to a different part of your body. Working out addresses the issue to a degree: it improves circulation, providing more oxygen to your liver and kidneys so they can better filter out toxins. You can also give your system even more support and pull out bad stuff with the next two detox tools: activated charcoal and glutathione.

3) Activated charcoal to bind toxins

Activated charcoal is a form of carbon that has massive surface area and a strong negative charge. It’s been around for thousands of years and it’s still used in emergency rooms today to treat poisoning.

Charcoal binds to chemicals whose molecules have positive charges, including aflatoxin and other polar mycotoxins, BPA, and common pesticides. Once the chemicals attach to the charcoal you can pass them normally (i.e. poop them out).

Charcoal can bind to the good stuff, too (i.e. vitamins and essential minerals) so I don’t recommend taking it within an hour of other supplements. Try taking a couple charcoal pills along with exercise or have a sauna session. They should absorb many of the toxins you release into your gut and GI tract.

4) Glutathione to protect your cells

Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that protects you from heavy metal damage, according to studies in both human and rat cells. This powerful antioxidant also supports liver enzymes that break down mold toxins and heavy metals. Your digestion will destroy normal glutathione, so opt for a liposomal glutathione supplement that makes it through your stomach. You can also supplement with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and alpha-lipoic acid, which your body can use to build glutathione on its own. If you have severe heavy metal or mycotoxin poisoning, talk to a naturopath or functional medicine doctor about intravenous (IV) glutathione. It’s expensive and less convenient than an oral supplement, but it works very well.

5) Calcium-D Glucarate for liver support

Calcium D-Glucarate converts to glucaric acid in your body, supporting a crucial detoxification pathway in your liver. Glucaric acid scavenges your body to bind and eliminate unavoidable toxins that would otherwise wreak havoc on your health and performance.

6) Cryotherapy to stimulate mitochondria

We’ve talked about how heat and exercise can increase fat burning to detox your fat cells. It turns out cold can do the same. Cryochambers are gaining popularity with professional athletes and other high performers for their ability to quell inflammation. It turns out they can help you burn fat – and release the toxins stored in it – as well.

A cryochamber uses liquid nitrogen to supercool your body, stimulating mitochondrial function and decreasing inflammation. Intense cold also destroys fat cells, which has led to cryolipolysis therapy as a way to slim down. You can use it to detox, too.

Can’t get your hands on a cryochamber? Try traditional cold thermogenesis instead.

7) Ketosis for fat flushing

Quick disclaimer: I haven’t found studies specifically looking at ketosis and toxin load, so you may want to take this section with a grain of (Himalayan) salt.  That said, ketosis is a very effective way to induce lipolysis, particularly if you’re fasting.

When you’re in ketosis and you haven’t eaten recently, your body breaks down your fat stores into free fatty acids, which it then converts to ketones for fuel. That means that, in theory, you should be able to supercharge your detox (and fat loss) by dropping into nutritional ketosis.

The Bulletproof Diet puts you into mild ketosis, which curbs your hunger and sharpens your brain without forcing you to forego carbs entirely. If you want to try nutritional ketosis for detoxing, you’ll have to modify the Bulletproof Diet slightly. Skip carb reefed days for a couple weeks and limit carbs to ~30-50 grams per day. You can use keto urine strips or – even better – a blood ketone meter to test and make sure you’re becoming fat-adapted. Once your levels read around 1.5 mg/dL, you’re comfortably in nutritional ketosis. At that point, fasting will attack your fat stores and mobilize toxins, which you can mop up with activated charcoal or sweat out (or both).

8) Chelation therapy for heavy metals

Chelation therapy is the strongest way to detox heavy metals. It can also be dangerous, so many doctors don’t recommend it unless you have moderate to severe heavy metal poisoning. Chelation therapy uses compounds called chelators that form strong bonds with heavy metals, leaving them unable to further poison your body. Chelators mobilize the toxins, and you can either pass them normally or bind them up with adsorbents like activated charcoal. Chelation therapy is very effective for removing lead, mercury, aluminum, arsenic, iron, and copper.

If you’ve been exposed to a lot of heavy metals, talk to a functional medicine doctor about chelation therapy. You really want to go to a medical professional for this one, because it’s so effective that if your liver and kidneys aren’t able to process the metals (a common problem in people with heavy metal poisoning) you can get seriously ill.

Bulletproof detox protocol

Each of these 8 methods works well on its own, and you can stack methods for an even greater effect. Exercise and sauna sessions are a good example. Preliminary evidence suggests that exercising and then hitting the sauna afterward will detoxify you better than either one alone does. With that in mind, here’s a sample detox protocol:

If you have a lot of fat and you’re burning it off quickly, you’re probably getting rid of a lot of toxins at once, and you may get a headache, digestive problems, brain fog, etc. If that happens try taking more glutathione, vitamin C, and charcoal. Be sure you take charcoal at least an hour away from other supplements, as it binds to vitamin C.

Toxins are a fact of modern life, especially if you live in a city or somewhere with poor air quality, mold, and/or a lot of petrochemical byproducts. These detox methods can give your body a little extra support dealing with pollutants and help you perform your best.

Health Benefits of Red Light Therapy and How to Get It

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation (PBM) or light box therapy, has been around for 40 years – since the invention of lasers. What is it, specifically? Red light therapy uses certain wavelengths of light to restore, repair, and protect tissue that is either injured, degenerating, or at risk of dying. While varying wavelengths affect the body differently, as far as healing with red light is concerned, the most effective wavelengths range from 630-670 and 810-880.

How does red light therapy work?

Red light wavelengths affect bodily cells on a biochemical level by increasing mitochondrial function – the ability to produce cellular energy. The more cellular energy production, the better the body functions as a whole. When red light wavelengths are used on the skin’s surface, they penetrate 8-10 millimeters into the skin. So depending upon where the red light is deployed (head or knee, for instance), all of the surrounding skin layers, blood vessels, lymph pathways, nerves, and even hair follicles are affected.

What are the benefits of red light therapy?

Red light therapy works from the inside-out to enhance mitochondrial function in cells. This, in turn, leads to several skin benefits. Red light decreases skin inflammation, smooths skin tone, repairs sun damage, fades scars and stretch marks, and even builds collagen in the skin, which reduces wrinkles. It also heals wounds and can prevent recurring cold sores or herpes simplex. Red light works on the lymphatic system to improve your body’s detoxification abilities by increasing blood flow. It may even stimulate hair growth in your hair follicles.

Studies reveal that red light heals age-related macular degeneration of the eyes.[ref url=”https://www.sciencealert.com/near-infrared-light-heals-eyes”][ref url=” http://uwm.edu/healthsciences/news/a-novel-approach-to-using-light-to-treat-macular-degeneration/”] It’s also used to treat knee osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, cognitive dysfunction following brain injury, and fibromyalgia.

In an episode of Bulletproof Radio (iTunes), Scott Nelson, founder of Joov shared the results of a study involving Joov devices, showing the wide spectrum of hormone benefits.

“With the use of daily, full-body red and near-infrared light therapy with our devices, not only did [women] see really healthy progesterone increases, but they also saw balanced progesterone to estrogen ratios, which is really important, because estrogen dominance is really common as females age,” says Nelson.

Check out the rest of the podcast episode to find out how Joov lights increased testosterone, too.

What are the best sources of red light therapy?

  • You can undergo red light therapy with a qualified professional like a trained rheumatologist or dermatologist. Ask your doctor for a referral.
  • Some medical spas offer red light therapy for about $50-100 per session. Infrared saunas are unique from regular saunas in that they heat the body from the inside-out. Both red light therapy and infrared saunas enhance mitochondrial function, though in different ways. Unlike red light therapy, infrared sauna light is visible – though it penetrates much deeper into the body. You’ll have to experiment to see which works best for you. Learn more about the benefits of infrared sauna use here.
  • Reap the benefits of red light at home with a light therapy device like Joovv. Or, install red lights around your home – there are red lights on Amazon that sell for as little as $6. Use them in the early morning and later at night, as well as therapeutically to increase mitochondrial function and collagen production. Hold the light over an injury for a few minutes a day. You can also find LED colored lights with a brightness and color remote controller. (This lets you switch from blue to red, depending on what time of day it is.)
  • The newest addition to the red light family is actually getting it from your computer or phone screen. Color Tint is a new feature on the Apple iOS 10 that turns your entire screen red, which Apple notes has its own benefits. While they are not necessarily all health-related like a red light therapy box, it is possible that you’ll squint less looking at your screen in the middle of the night due to the red light.

The Weird Chinese Fruit for Stronger Genes, a Sharper Brain, and Better Sex

[tldr]

  • Osthole (also osthol) is a compound found in the fruits of cnidium monnieri, in angelica root, and in other herbs that healers use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
  • Historically, traditional healers have used osthole to improve sexual function in both men and women, for infections, and for skin problems, among other uses.
  • Scientists today are finding out that osthole has valuable properties, namely for your brain, for tumors, and for your libido.

[/tldr]

As I’ve been researching anti-aging compounds that improve human performance as a part of my next book, I came across a profoundly useful herb I hadn’t ever tried. It’s now a part of my daily stack because the effects are very noticeable!

Osthole (also osthol) is a compound found in the fruits of cnidium monnieri, in angelica root, and in other herbs that healers use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Historically, traditional healers have used osthole to improve sexual function in both men and women, for infections, and for skin problems, among other uses.

Ancient healers were onto something. Scientists today are finding out that osthole has valuable properties, namely for your brain, for tumors, and for your libido (traditional doctors knew that one already). Research is emerging and mostly involves animal models and cells outside the body, plus the thousand years of human use without formal clinical trials. It’s worth paying attention to just for its ability to replicate ED drugs, not to mention all the other good stuff.

Here’s what the science says.

Osthole and your brain

Scientists are investigating osthole as a potential cognitive enhancer, and what they’ve observed using animal models is compelling. Here’s what they’ve found so far.

Osthole improved cognitive impairment and brain plasticity in the hippocampus of rats with Altzheimer’s disease,[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4268736/”] which is noteworthy because the hippocampus is one of the areas of the brain most affected by Altzheimer’s.[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22192775″] It does this by regulating glutamate, a neurotransmitter that makes brain cells over-fire when there’s too much, and you have learning and memory impairments when there’s not enough.

In another study, researchers were able to show that osthole improved cognitive impairments and increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus,[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26424009″] which helps produce new brain cells.

If you read Head Strong, you may recall that BDNF acts as “Miracle Gro” for the brain. Not only do you need it to produce new brain cells, but BDNF is also involved with mitochondrial transport to areas of your brain cells with a high energy need.[ref url=”http://www.jbc.org/content/289/3/1227.full”] One of the reasons people feel mentally sharp after a short time in the Bulletproof Lifestyle is because it creates the perfect low-inflammation, high polyphenol storm that increases BDNF and makes mitochondria thrive. Other ways to increase BDNF are taking a patented coffee fruit extract, which raises BDNF by 140%,[ref url=”http://www.jneurosci.org/content/30/38/12653″][ref url=”http://file.scirp.org/pdf/FNS_2013083011411606.pdf”] and exercise, which does not raise BDNF as much as supplements. Get more ways to raise your BDNF here. Kids and young brains have more BDNF than old brains, so it’s your job to crank it up.

Osthole and histone acetylation

A third mechanism in play involves gene expression. Histone acetyltransferase essentially starts the cascade of steps that turn on a gene. Histone deacetylase does the opposite (more on that, coming up). One variation of histone deacetylase shows a lot of activity in the brain. Scientists used an osthole derivative to inhibit deacetylase, which increased rats’ performance on a variety of learning and memory tasks.[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23606881″]

Osthole and sexual function

Scientists found that osthole acts on the same mechanism as prescription Viagra to enhance erectile function in rabbits. Like Viagra, osthole stimulates the release of nitric oxide which relaxed the blood vessels and caused penile tissue to engorge.[ref url=”https://www.thieme-connect.com/products/ejournals/html/10.1055/s-2001-12013″][ref url=”https://www.auajournals.org/doi/abs/10.1016/S0022-5347%2805%2967613-6″]

Researchers observed similar effects in women using Zestra, a botanical oil that contains osthol and other compounds formulated for female arousal.[ref url=”https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/713847125″]

Osthole acts on more than just blood flow. Scientists demonstrated its ability to raise testosterone in healthy mice as well as in reproductively altered mice.[ref url=”http://en.cnki.com.cn/Article_en/CJFDTOTAL-LNZY200711084.htm”]

I have not measured my testosterone levels since I started taking the herb, but the next morning effects of this stuff have me feeling even more like a teenager. It was not subtle, and if you’ve heard the podcasts about the stem cells a doctor injected in my reproductive organs, you know things are already working fine, thank you very much! 🙂

Testosterone levels have a key role in sex drive, arousal, and sexual function. Osthole raised testosterone levels in the bloodstream of rodents, even rodents that had been castrated before the study.[ref url=”http://en.cnki.com.cn/Article_en/CJFDTOTAL-LNZY200711084.htm”][ref url=”http://en.cnki.com.cn/Article_en/CJFDTOTAL-ZYCA200407017.htm”][ref url=”http://en.cnki.com.cn/Article_en/CJFDTOTAL-LNZY200711084.htm”] That delivers a dual-angle approach to sexual function.

These weren’t human studies, but traditional healers have been getting the same effect with cnidium monnieri fruit and angelica root, both high in osthole, for centuries. That’s what I’m using.

Research on osthole as a cancer treatment

Osthole has been making waves as a potential lead compound in the development of anti-cancer drugs[ref url=”https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ptr.2044″][ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19370943″] because it can turn genes on and off. Here’s how it all works.

How genes turn on and off

For your body to use a gene, your body needs to successfully read and copy your DNA. Tumors form when something goes wrong with these processes, or when mitochondria turn bad.

When DNA is tightly packed around proteins, transcription chemicals cannot bust through the proteins to access DNA in order to make a copy. When those proteins are loosely packed, transcription chemicals can get to DNA to get things rolling.[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12672492″]

One of the most important proteins in the nucleus that DNA tangles up with is called a histone. When your body is good at a process called acetylation, you can acetylate those histone proteins, which makes it easy to copy your DNA. Without enough histone acetylation, your DNA is locked up and you won’t make good copies.

Histone has an “on” switch and an “off” switch — think of it as creating outlets for the plugs that will power genes.

Histone deacetylase is the “off” switch. It’s an enzyme that dissolves the bond between lysine and the acetyl group. In effect, histone deacetylase rips the outlet out of the wall, pulling the plug on gene expression.

Histone acetyltransferase and deacetylase have to work in balance — you don’t want your genes to express with abandon, and you don’t want your genes to be silenced into oblivion. A lot of disease processes, cancer being a big one, trigger when histone deacetylase goes into overdrive and starts turning off too many genes. When that happens, your cells’ defenses shut down.[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12672492″][ref url=”https://www.nature.com/articles/1210610″]

This is a problem that osthole fixes — it keeps genes going that would have otherwise been unplugged.

Deacetylase inhibitors as a cancer treatment

One of your body’s defenses against cancerous tumors is the ability to kill off damaged cells before they can divide and proliferate. Gene transcription has to be in good working order to do that.[ref url=”https://www.nature.com/articles/1210610″] Researchers have been experimenting with deacetylase inhibitors to prevent the silencing of genes that we want to express.[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12120280″] Bonus superpower of ketosis: one of the ketones your body makes when you’re in ketosis, beta-hydroxybutyrate, acts as a histone deacetylase inhibitor.[ref url=”http://science.sciencemag.org/content/339/6116/211″]

Osthole has shown promise as compound that targets gene regulation. Researchers prepared several different compounds of osthole, three of which acted as deacetylase inhibitor. One variation in particular had an effect similar to a deacetylase inhibitor that is already used in clinical practice as a treatment for T-cell lymphoma. Researchers have also shown that it can be modified to target specific cell lines.[ref url=”https://www.researchgate.net/publication/41810178_Synthesis_of_N_-Hydroxycinnamides_Capped_with_a_Naturally_Occurring_Moiety_as_Inhibitors_of_Histone_Deacetylase”]

Other studies showed similar results against breast[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21051232″] ovarian[ref url=”https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27566206″] and leukemia cancer cells.[ref url=”https://www.thieme-connect.com/products/ejournals/html/10.1055/s-2003-45188″]

Cnidium is an example of an herb that humans have used for centuries because you can detect that it works. Now we have enough science to start to understand why and how it works, even though no one has heard of it!

Given how potent it is, I’ve become a big fan. I take 1000 mg of Barlow’s Herbal Elixirs 1-2 times per day (I’m 200lbs+). Too much can cause nausea, so start small. This could change your life if you have ED.

How to Improve Focus and Boost Brain Power, According to Science

  • If you feel burnt out at the end of the day or you have trouble focusing, use these hacks to increase your mental energy and productivity.
  • Your brain mitochondria make ATP, the energy that fuels your brain activity. If you train your mitochondria to be stronger, your brain will produce more energy, and you’ll be able to focus and be more productive than you thought possible.
  • You can deepen your reserves of mental energy (aka brain power) by hacking your planning, decision fatigue, sleep, food, workouts, supplements, and more. Read on for a full guide.

Do you have some days when you’re focused and productive for hours, and other days when you wake up with brain fog and feel exhausted by 3PM?

Your ability to focus comes down to mental energy — how much you have, where you get it, and how you use it.

Mental energy may seem abstract, but it’s rooted in biology: your brain’s ability to keep running ties directly to how much ATP your mitochondria produce. ATP is the molecule that your cells use for fuel; if you train your brain cells to make more ATP, and give them the right raw materials to build it, your brain will literally produce more energy, and you’ll feel a profound difference in your productivity and mental clarity.

If you want to learn how to focus, follow this definitive guide to hacking your brain for maximum mental energy, improved focus, and higher productivity.

How to improve focus and mental energy

how to boost mental energy and focusAll your cells run on adenosine triphosphate (ATP), your body’s energy currency. Mitochondria, the power plants of your cells, are constantly making ATP and sending it through your body to fuel everything you do, from walking and talking to exercising and thinking.

That last one, thinking, is a major energy drain. Your brain uses a huge portion of power, especially considering its size; about 20% of your daily ATP production goes to fueling your brain, and your brain cells have a staggering number of mitochondria that create energy day in and day out.

Your brain is an energy hog, and overusing it can drain your energy bank account quickly. If you’ve ever felt unfocused and had poor impulse control at the end of the day, you’ve experienced decision fatigue — every time your brain has to make a decision, it burns a little fuel. If you’re making hundreds of little decisions a day, you’re going to end up burning out much faster.

Fortunately, you can hack your mental energy in a few different ways:

  • Make your mitochondria stronger so they produce more energy and improve brain function
  • Give your brain the raw materials to make plenty of ATP
  • Remove toxins that sap your energy
  • Give your brain fewer decisions to make so your energy lasts longer

Head Strong is all about building stronger brain mitochondria to make your brain more powerful than you thought possible. Here are a few of the best ways to make your mitochondria better and increase your mental energy for better brain function and focus.

Keep learning to keep your mental muscles strong

mucuna pruriens benefitsYour brain’s energy requirements are so high that your brain cells live and die by the use-it-or-lose-it principle, literally. Whatever functions you’re not using quickly weaken.

“Brains love to learn,” says Brett Wingeier, Ph,D,, co-founder of Halo Sport, the wearable neurostimulation device made specifically for athletes.

“What’s happening under the hood is your brain cells are firing, and they’re constantly forming stronger and weaker connections that help them work together in exactly the right networks for exactly the right output. And what do we mean by output? That could mean the perfect backhand. That could mean the perfect Ping-Pong overhead spin shot, or it could mean learning a language. It’s all about your brain optimizing itself to get the job done,” Wingeier says. You can listen to the rest of his interview on Bulletproof Radio (iTunes).

To keep your brain strong, find something you’re interested in — a skill, a language, an instrument, an art medium — and spend some time every day practicing and improving.

Neurostimulation to maximize learning

Photo of Brett from HaloDoctors have used neurostimulation, via devices that send a gentle electrical current through the skin into specific areas of your brain, in a clinical setting for decades.

These devices are becoming more available for use outside a clinical setting. Wingeier’s company, Halo Neuroscience, developed a product that uses electrical stimulation to prime the brain for learning motor activities, like sports and instruments.

“The thing about this technology is you’re still leveraging the brain’s natural mechanisms of learning. Those are so powerful, and so effective, that it doesn’t make sense to disrupt those,” says Wingeier.

You still have to put in the work, though. Think of neurostimulation devices as preheating the oven so it’s ready to cook when you are.

“It’s not The Matrix. We’re not downloading Kung Fu into your brain,” says Wingeier. “It’s using technology to make sure that your brain is dialed in, and ready to use its natural learning mechanisms where and when you want it.”

Design your schedule to match your internal clock

how to be more productiveYou probably have a part of the day when you’re unusually productive. For some people it’s early in the morning; for others it’s late at night.

Everyone’s body has a different natural rhythm to it. Structure your day so you work during your most energetic times, and rest during the times when you’re less productive. If you usually feel focused between 6AM and 10AM and you want to relax during the afternoon, plan to do all your most challenging and thinking-intensive work first thing in the morning.

Ready to work at 2 AM, but not a morning person? Get your big projects done late at night and sleep in.

Follow your biology instead of fighting against it. You’ll be much more efficient with your energy.

Minimize decision fatigue to become more productive

how to focusCreate as many routines as possible to remove decisions from your day. Wake up, make your bed, have coffee, brush your teeth, meditate, check email, start work — follow the same routine day after day until it becomes automatic. Setting out clothes and planning your meals, snacks, workouts, etc., in advance will also help. Not having to think about your schedule frees up a lot of mental energy to focus on the important stuff.

And if you have any big or complicated projects to do, or any important choices to make, always tackle them first, when you’re fresh and have plenty of mental resources to dedicate to them. Save smaller tasks like replying to emails for the end of the day, when you don’t have to do any mental heavy lifting.

Upgrade your sleep for more mental energy and focus

how to focus and be productiveDeep sleep is one of the fundamental ways to make your brain stronger. Your brain replenishes neurotransmitters and clears out cellular waste during the deeper stages of sleep, leaving you clear-headed when you wake up. Deep sleep also slows down brain aging.

The single most effective way to improve your sleep is to black out your room. Light degrades melatonin, one of the hormones that makes you sleepy and triggers cellular repair while you sleep. Get light-blocking curtains and use something to cover all the lights on your router, computer, and so on (electrical tape is a good option).

Check out this guide to sleep hacking for more ways to increase deep sleep. Most of the hacks are free and you can start them tonight.

Eat fat and polyphenols to support your brain

eat fat for better focusA high-fat, low-carb diet keeps your blood sugar stable and low so you have steady energy throughout the day. Some carbs are OK, but cut out as much sugar as you can; it causes energy-sapping brain inflammation and makes your blood sugar spike and then tank, leaving you sleepy and unable to focus.

Make sure you get plenty of polyphenols as well. Polyphenols are powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that you find in coffee, tea, chocolate, and colorful vegetables and fruits. Polyphenols improve memory and decrease brain inflammation. They also protect your brain from stress.

Exercise to grow new mitochondria

exercise improves focusWorking out is amazing for your brain’s energy production. Pushing yourself physically makes you mentally fit, too: it creates brand new neural mitochondria and makes your existing mitochondria more efficient at producing energy.

Manage stress and practice gratitude

manage stress to be more productiveStress burns up a huge amount of energy. It also physically changes parts of your brain that regulate attention and focus. You lose memory function and your planning skills suffer when you’re stressed.

Stress is universal, and it can sap your energy you if you don’t consciously manage it. Two great options for managing stress are:

Take nootropics to unlock a more powerful brain

nootropics for focus, energy and concentrationNootropics (also called smart drugs) are compounds that improve cognitive function. You can use nootropics to enhance everything from memory to sustained attention to faster mental turnover.

Brain Octane Oil is a great introductory nootropic; it rapidly converts to ketones that your brain can use for fuel.

Unfair Advantage is another good option. It supports your brain mitochondria and promotes the growth of new ones for improved mental energy.
