Super Human

Super Human

From Bulletproof creator and bestselling author Dave Asprey comes a revolutionary approach to anti-aging that will help you up your game at any age.

** New York Times Bestseller **

Dave Asprey suffered countless symptoms of aging as a young man, which sparked a life-long burning desire to grow younger with each birthday. For more than twenty years, he has been on a quest to find innovative, science-backed methods to upgrade human biology and redefine the limits of the mind, body, and spirit. The results speak for themselves. Now in his forties, Dave is smarter, happier, and more fit and successful than ever before.

In Super Human, he shows how this is level of health and performance possible for all of us. While we assume we will peak in middle age and then decline, Asprey’s research reveals there is another way. It is possible to make changes on the sub-cellular level to dramatically extend life span. And the tools to live longer also give you more energy and brainpower right now.

The answers lie in Dave’s Seven Pillars of Aging that contribute to degeneration and disease while diminishing your performance in the moment. Using simple interventions—like diet, sleep, light, exercise, and little-known but powerful hacks from ozone therapy to proper jaw alignment, you can decelerate cellular aging and supercharge your body’s ability to heal and rejuvenate.?

A self-proclaimed human guinea pig, Asprey arms readers with practical advice to maximize their lives at every age with his signature mix of science-geek wonder, candor, and enthusiasm. Getting older no longer has to mean decline. Now it’s an opportunity to become Super Human.

Hacking Hair Follicle Function – Dr. Alan Bauman and Dr. Sophia Kogan – #844

If you’re losing your hair, you’re not alone. Hair loss is more common than you might think: 18 percent of men under 29 have moderate to advanced hair loss, and that number jumps to 53 percent for men in their 40s. Hair loss affects at least 50 percent of women by age 50.

From your scalp to your stress load to the state of your hormones, your hair reflects what’s going on inside of you.

“Scalp health is a big problem,” says hair transplant surgeon Dr. Alan J. Bauman, “and we know now that there’s a direct link between scalp health and the inflammation (in the body) that’s going on. The hair fiber is dead but the follicle is alive, and when there’s inflammation going on in and around that area the follicle just doesn’t perform as well. So, scalp health is really important.”

And say bye-bye to the painful “plugs” you may have heard about before. Dr. Bauman’s sophisticated procedures can be undetectably natural with minimal downtime.

Dr. Sophia Kogan conducts research and develops nutraceutical solutions for hair thinning and loss.

“Women go through a tremendous amount of stress in relationship to their hair, even more so than men because men sort of expect to thin,” Dr. Kogan says. She explains that the experience of hair loss for women often has a specific shame and guilt associated with it, too.

Stress effects your hair throughout your entire lifetime, but during prolonged periods of high stress it’s even worse. When you’re suffering from physical and/or emotional stress, the body pulls its resources to preserve its life internally, not hair growth. Since everyone experiences stress differently, it’s generally important to take time in your day for something that brings you into a flow state, Dr. Kogan suggests. Calming your nervous system plays an important role in stress management.

Key Notes

  • Dr. Kogan has a personal story here because she had hair loss due to an eating disorder and just the stress of medical training and it turns out stress and hair loss are integral, they’re linked.  – 1:40
  • I’m going to boil it down to a single question, why do people lose hair?  – 2:15
  • Genetically androgenetic alopecia is the condition that can affect both men and women but it looks different. It expresses itself different, the phenotype, how it looks in a male and female gender is going to be different.  – 3:11
  • We know now that there’s a direct link between scalp health and the inflammation that’s going on.  – 4:06
  • If you’ve already have a receding hairline and you’re hoping that the laser is going to grow back the hairline, well, that’s really not going to happen to you.  – 6:20
  • Genetics play a role in everything but there’s a strong component of epigenetics. For me, the stress was the epigenetic component that brought my hair loss into progression, into manifestation.  – 8:10
  • The main issue with minoxidil or at least in the Rogaine and the generic Rogaine varieties and even the online pharmacies is that it’s going to be pretty greasy, gooey, sometimes very irritating, messy protocol.  – 11:22
  • Probably one of the most exciting therapies that we have is platelet rich plasma that’s come of age really within the recent years. That’s really the workhorse of regenerative medicine.  – 12:49
  • When somebody has been producing cortisol over a long period of time, eventually the adrenals get fatigued and then there’s less production of cortisol so then there’s a whole other slew of issues that happens.  – 14:25
  • You can speed surgical healing with red light or peptides with ozone. Are there specific peptides that you use in the practice?  – 16:11
  • Self care is extremely important. We have to find time. It’s important.  – 18:41
  • Taking ashwagandha is important, but also implementing these small incremental changes in your life. You said, gratitude, meditation, yoga, even joy in itself, hobbies to sort of decrease that stress and mitigate that stress response, that’s very important. – 21:02
  • Let’s talk about some of the things that women can do. And then I want to really go in on circadian biology. – 22:09
  • Is there a hereditary tendency? Is it something in the family that we can identify? Mom’s side or dad’s side, it can come through both sides of the family, skip generations, skip siblings. We want to get an inventory of that.  – 23:59
  • Hair follicles actually have their own functional mechanisms for producing hormones, for producing cortisol. We know that in the whole body, we have the hypothalamus, it tells the pituitary gland to secrete ACTH, which tells the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol.  – 25:22
  • It could be once a week or every other week. There’s a lot of nuance in between, because you say, “Well, how often should you shampoo?” Well, it kind of depends on what you’re using to wash your hair.  – 29:31
  • Yes, hair is important. It’s going to shape our face. It’s going to make us look better, whatever, but then there’s tons of beautiful bald women out there or bald men. Don’t feel at all, shouldn’t be feeling bad or compromised or anyway different than the ones who do have hair. It’s just that it’s a great bonus, but it’s not the most important thing in life.  – 30:53

WOMEN’S HEALTH: How to Get the Right Care – A Top 10 Episode with Dr. Jolene Brighten

Welcome to Your Upgraded Summer!

This new series revisits the Top 10 Bulletproof Radio episodes of all time. The topics cover essentials like nutrition, energy, hormones, sleep and autophagy, as well as gut, brain, autoimmune and women’s health.

You’ll get the main points in a shortened version so you can get the good stuff and get on with your summer plans. And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.

Dr. Jolene Brighten takes the No. 9 spot with: On Women’s Health, Post-Birth Control Syndrome, and Brain Injuries – Dr. Jolene Brighten – #415

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Jolene Brighten, a functional medicine naturopathic doctor, talks about the birth control pill, states of giving birth and recovery, and even traumatic brain injuries.

Specializing in women’s health, Dr. Brighten focuses on how gender bias in medicine often undermines women’s ability to work through health difficulties. The conversation covers the experiences women often have after giving birth, such as hypothyroidism, brain fog, and larger mental health issues due to major hormonal changes.

She takes a strong stance on the birth control pill. She shares the ways it causes leaky gut, disrupts thyroid hormones, increases risk of depression, and more. By being off the pill, she says, you can be more aligned with your body. She advocates for fertility awareness, a process in which (with the help of technology) you can track your cycle and the way your hormones manifest themselves in your life, month-to-month.

Dr. Brighten first works on healing the body, then the mind, and then on a bigger level, like healing family lineage.

In an interesting aside, we also veer in discussion about traumatic brain injuries (we’ve both had one!)  and our immediate and long-term approaches for healing.

Our discussion is highly informed and even more encouraging. I think you’ll find it really helpful! Here’s what Dr. Brighten has to say:

  • On The Pill: “Unfortunately, what we’re seeing of the 100 million women worldwide, who have taken the pill, about 60 percent of them are only taking it for symptoms, which is a huge red flag to me. If only 40 percent are taking the pill to prevent pregnancy, then what’s up with this other 60 percent? And why are we not practicing root-cause resolution, which we could absolutely do, and just giving women a pill?”
  • On Birth: “For some reason, somewhere along the line, we got it in our head that women should be able to pop out a baby and then just go along their merry way. And at six weeks, everything’s recovered and fine. Reality is, is it takes a whole year to really rebuild the nutrients and recover your body.”
  • On Orgasm: “It’s a big thing that gets dismissed in women’s medicine. Having an orgasm is this mythical unicorn and women aren’t that interested in sex. But when you look at the research, there are so many benefits.”

Bulletproof Radio:

Key Notes

  • Dr. Jolene is  trained in naturopathic medicine, but also in biochemistry. She wrote a book called Healing Your Body Naturally After Childbirth: The New Mom’s Guide to Navigating the Fourth Trimester.  – 0:42
  • Everyone’s focus is on baby. So, once baby is delivered, mom gets the six week checkup. “Hey, your vagina’s looking okay, no signs of infection. Fantastic. Go upon your way.”  – 2:18
  • When you deliver your baby, what follows is a placenta. And when you deliver the placenta, your hormones instantly drop to the level of like a post-menopausal woman.  – 4:04
  • I want to shift gears a bit from the pregnancy side of things to talk about what happens before pregnancy. Let’s talk birth control.  – 5:31
  • So, what happens when a woman goes off of the birth control pill? What should she expect?  – 7:07
  • The fertility awareness method is pretty profound, because in addition to, if you’re a woman, you start tracking this, you realize that there are times of the month, not when you’re necessarily ovulating. – 9:59
  • Chaste tree berry, it’s something that’s used… It stimulates the LH production in the brain to help stimulate the ovaries to make progesterone.  – 11:38
  • “I took the million dollar equipment we use for measuring our WiFi things. And I turned it around and I aimed it at myself and oh my God, there’s all this data coming off the body.”  – 12:03
  • I came from a nutrition background and we were like, “Never, never have coffee on an empty stomach and keto is bad.” I laugh about what I was taught 20 years ago.  – 14:46
  • I took a titanium knee to the head flying through the air. – 15:58
  • Something you brought up, so in the first 24 hours, inflammation goes up in the brain, we also develop leaky gut.  – 21:44
  • There’s a lot of things to heal the brain that you have to do those if you’re going to heal your gut. It’s not going to be just L-glutamine and doing autoimmune paleo diet or something like that. No, there’s neurological component to all of this.  – 23:56
  • Dave Asprey:
Someone came and said, “Look, I want to perform better at everything I do, better at being a human being. What are the three most important pieces of advice you have for me?  – 26:01

HORMONES: How to Balance & Manage Yours – A Top 10 Episode with T.S. Wiley

T.S. Wiley takes the No. 4 spot with: How To Have The Hormones of a 20-Year-Old: T.S. Wiley #508

T.S. Wiley has been conducting research on aging, cancer, sleep, hormones and more for decades. She’s a researcher, a medical theorist, and an author of the books “Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survivaland “Sex, Lies, and Menopause: The Shocking Truth About Synthetic Hormones and the Benefits of Natural Alternatives.” In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, the conversation covers why it’s important to manage your hormones.

Hormones keep your body in homeostasis, and when they’re out of whack, well, so are you. She’s the creator of the Wiley Protocol, which uses natural topical hormones to restore sleep, memory, libido, a quiet immune system and pain-free days and nights for both men and women.

Her study of hormones is connected to genomics, epigenetics, your surrounding environment, the larger environment and bacteria. She explains why she developed the protocol and the impacts hormones have on our whole health, such as in cancer treatment, restoring brain function, and more.

This episode will help you understand more about the ways you can control your external environment in order to improve our body’s internal processes. Here’s what T.S. Wiley has to say:

  • “Everything in my head is connected, and you can’t explain one discipline separately. You can’t talk about hormones if you can’t talk about the genes they’re turning on and off. You can’t talk about genomics unless you talk about epigenetics, which is the environment turning things on and off, and now, it’s very obvious to me in the new work I’ve done that it’s all about the bacteria who own the planet. You have to realize they’ve been here for three billion years. They made us, and the plants, and the fish, and the birds because they wanted to walk.”
  • “What the hell happened to my libido? I have a raging libido, and it was just gone one day. I thought, “I need hormones. I got to figure this out.” I read everything I could and nothing made sense, and I basically went to the notion that if you were going to put back something that you’ve lost, like insulin in a Type 1 diabetic, you would want to put it back the way you had it. Type 1 diabetics, of course, take insulin depending on their blood sugar after they eat, whatever they eat. They measure it all the time because that’s the best they can do to replicate how the body would respond.”
  • “There’s two immune systems. There’s the one in your gut that is defense, that keeps their cousins out. That keeps you from a getting a cold. Then, there’s the one that belongs to the planet, also, unfortunately in your gut and in every plant and everything, and that’s autoimmunity. That’s what takes you out.”

Bulletproof Radio:

Key Notes

  • The hormones I created are in a wave for men and women, because that flat line is the thing you see on a TV show when you’re dead, right? Nothing’s flat, everything’s moving. – 2:24
  • We can change our nutrient environment, we can change our light environment, our temperature environment, our vibration environment, our everything environment, if only we know what to do.  – 3:34
  • Tell me about the Wiley Protocol that worked for this gynecologist. – 8:38
  • Day 12 makes you a progesterone receptor. Day 12 spikes LH, so you would ovulate, if you were young. Day 12 hits G1 arrest, everything stops growing in the lining of your uterus, your breasts.  – 10:31
  • If your mitochondria are dying, you’re not going to make hormones. But if you put hormones back, then the mitochondria will make you more hormones.  – 14:42
  • More importantly, it’s a bolus, and you want this to last you most of the night, because melatonin blocks estrogen receptors in the beginning of the night, so they pop back up and you can stay asleep all night, if you’re a man or a woman.  – 19:31
  • The Wiley Protocol for men, the DHEA goes right above your kidneys in the back, the dose, the testosterone goes right on your femoral artery,  – 20:57
  • If someone came to you tomorrow and they said, “Look, I want to perform better at everything I do as a human being,” what are your three most important pieces of advice for me?  – 25:35
  • I said, “Build a boat.” I said, “I don’t care if you ever get in it. Give it to somebody,” but your work must have purpose, and the purpose is not your muscle physique. The purpose is doing something for somebody else, and I would tell them purpose is very important.  – 28:28
