Wired to Lead the Neobiological Revolution – Jane Metcalfe – #1025

EPISODE #1025

Wired to Lead the Neobiological Revolution

Jane Metcalfe

Learn about the possibilities offered by the neobiological revolution, the ways machine learning is changing how we approach health care, and the complexities of genetics and our immune systems.

Jane_Metcalfe

In this Episode of The Human Upgrade™...

… the guest is one of the founders of Wired Magazine and someone who has been a continuous source of interest, news and data for decades, Jane Metcalfe. Having basically dissected nerds for her entire life, Jane now runs a fantastic newsletter and news site called NEO.LIFE where she writes about biohacking and the future. If you were to combine someone who really understands society and understands tech (and has read as much science fiction as possible) you would have Jane.

Jane Metcalfe is an editor, publisher, speaker/moderator, entrepreneur, board member, advisor, manager, and investor, experienced in harnessing new ideas to create strong brands, rapidly growing businesses, and leading healthy, creative, mission-driven organizations. Her superpower is that she is comfortable operating at the leading edge, anticipating trends, and positioning for the future.

Jane’s, focus throughout her, career has been on how technology is transforming our world. But now she is fascinated with how deeply we can see inside the body and how processing the data we collect allows us to discover new cells, understand complex biological systems, and engineer bacteria, viruses, DNA, and ultimately ourselves.

Her new platform, NEO.LIFE is for exploring how we Homo sapiens will use these technologies and new understandings to power our own evolution.

… to celebrate the imminent release of the new book, we’re doing something different than what you’re used to. Dave is getting interviewed on his own podcast to give you a preview of his book, Smarter Not Harder.

In the interviewer’s seat is retired Navy SEAL commander, author, expert in leadership and human performance, Rich Diviney. When Rich was a guest on the show previously (check out episode #937), he talked about mindset, optimism, resilience, and stress. This time, the script gets flipped. This interview intends to educate and inform about the new book and install some new capabilities in your operating systems. The goal is that even if you don’t read the book, you will still walk away from this interview with a brain that works better.

Smarter Not Harder: The Biohacker’s Guide to Getting the Body and Mind You Want is about helping you to become the best version of yourself by embracing laziness while increasing your energy and optimizing your biology. Rich is the perfect person to dive deeply into how the big ideas in this book work and give you an even greater reason to get the mind and body you want.

Dave packed “Smarter Not Harder” with practical, accessible information based on the latest research so you can achieve lasting health in less time. It’s biohacking fully applied. Never say, "I'm going to go spend a half hour exercising." Say, "I'm going to go save a half hour exercising." When you make that one switch, the body's like, "Oh yeah, this was a lot less work. I like this better."

Dave Asprey

The book, Smarter Not Harder, is not a diet nor a fitness plan. It is a system of targeted biohacks aimed at upgrading your metabolic, neurological, and epigenetic systems. Packed with practical, accessible information on better eating; smart workouts that give you more strength and energy in less time; and strategic therapies to reduce stress and boost resilience—Smarter Not Harder will show you how to achieve lasting health in less time.

Authentic Networking: The Give & Get Starts with Real Relationships – Joe Polish – #992

EPISODE #992

Authentic Networking: The Give & Get Starts with Real Relationships

Joe Polish

Nine principles for how you can connect, collaborate and build a successful business and meaningful life.

Joe_Polish_2022-2

In this Episode of The Human Upgrade™...

…Joe Polish, considered “the most connected person on the planet,” shares networking strategies that help you get what you want by giving people what they want.

Dave Asprey recently connected with Joe in person to talk about Joe’s new book so you can use nine genius principles to turn your business—and your personal relationships—around.

If you’re not asking “what’s in it for them?” when it comes to the people in your life—clients, colleagues, family and friends—you’re missing some important opportunities.

Here are a few things you’ll learn from Joe’s new book, “What’s in It for Them?: 9 Genius Networking Principles to Get What You Want by Helping Others Get What They Want,” as a how-to guide:

  • Deepen rapport and connect with others by identifying and reducing their suffering.

“Most bonding is made when you can resonate and you can connect on either some sort of mutual suffering, or the ability to have empathy for pain,” Joe says. “You’re able to step into that relationship and first relate to it (suffering or pain) and then actually help to eliminate it, reduce it or sit with it.”

  • Update Dale Carnegie’s insights to win the right friends and influence the right people.
  • Overcome others’ intimidation tactics to find true appreciation in relationships.
  • Build character for better results than capabilities can ever give on their own.
  • Use basic marketing principles to find true love.
  • Protect your efforts from the “takers” of the world

Joe did the hard work to heal from trauma and overcome addiction. He then spent years developing a genuine and generous approach to networking and building rapport. This approach propelled his business and led him to develop the Genius Network, one of the world’s most impactful networking groups for high-achieving entrepreneurs.

“No matter what you do—business or personally—it always involves relationships.”

Learn to think about health problems differently, ask questions that lead to answers, and upgrade your biology.

Interventions_1000x1000._revised

In this Episode of The Human Upgrade™...

… Dave talks about what could be causing brain fog with a podcast guest in this impromptu intervention. Keri Glassman, MS, RD, CDN, recently spoke about gut health as the expert for Omni-Biotic probiotics. During the interview, she was searching for a word and got frustrated she couldn’t grasp it quickly.

This intervention looks at the potential culprits responsible for Keri’s brain fog and memory hiccups:

  • Thyroid
  • Hormones, such as testosterone and DHEA
  • Perimenopause
  • Mast cell-mediated inflammation
  • Cortisol & stress
  • ADHD
  • Mold toxins
  • Mercury & lead

Keri is a registered dietitian, certified nutritionist, healthy cooking expert and author of four books. She also founded Nutritious Life, a lifestyle and media company and Nutritious Life Studio, an online education platform focused on nutrition, coaching, and business.

If you’re having trouble finding your words, take a listen to this episode for tips and resources.

Don’t Accept Suffering as Normal – Dr. Gabor Maté – #977

EPISODE #977

Don’t Accept Suffering as Normal

Dr. Gabor Maté

How to get to the root of trauma and illness to find healing—even within a toxic culture.

Gabor_Mate_photo_credit_matej_stransky

In this Episode of The Human Upgrade™...

… you’ll learn to define what’s really “normal” when it comes to your health. You’ll explore how today’s culture stresses the body, burdens the immune system, and undermines emotional balance. And why Western medicine often fails to treat the whole person.

This conversation covers an investigation into the causes of illness, a critique of how our society breeds disease, and offers a pathway to health and healing. One of the surprising things you’ll learn has to do with authenticity.

“The loss of authenticity is one of the major impacts of trauma,” says renowned Canadian speaker and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté. “It’s also a major cause of physical and mental illness.”

Dr. Maté is highly sought after for his expertise on topics like addiction, stress, trauma, and childhood development. He spent two decades in family practice and palliative care. He also worked for over a decade in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side (Canada) with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness.

“And what I found out when I was dealing with addictions, chronic physical illness, chronic mental illness, the origins always traced back to childhood trauma,” Dr. Maté says. “And once I realized that, I also realized that my medical education, while it’s brilliant in the technical and biological sense, left out the human, social and psychological and the emotional element. And so, then I began to talk to my patients about this stuff, and they began to teach me about their lives.”

“In the long term I am optimistic. I believe in the human beings. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, there's also great evidence, too, on behalf of the goodness of human beings in this world.”

Dr. Gabor Maté

In his newest book, “The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, & Healing in a Toxic Culture,” he pushes back on the prevailing understanding of “normal” because it neglects the roles that trauma and stress—and the pressures of modern-day living—exert on our bodies and our minds at the expense of good health.

“If you’re suffering, don’t accept it as normal, but ask what’s going on here?” Dr. Maté says. “Let the suffering instruct you that there’s something going on; that what you think is normal is actually not healthy or natural for you.”

More about Dr. Gabor Maté: For his groundbreaking medical work and writing he received the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian distinction, and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown, Vancouver, British Columbia. He co-developed a therapeutic approach called Compassionate Inquiry that’s now studied by therapists, physicians, counselors, and others internationally. His books examine addiction, trauma and childhood attachment:

  • “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction”
  • “When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress”
  • “Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What You Can Do About It”
  • “Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers”
